英語の前置詞は100以上あります（cambridge）
多くの前置詞は単一の単語です
そのほかに複数の単語で構成され、単一の前置詞のように機能するもの（群前置詞）もあります
ここでは 単一の前置詞 54種類、群前置詞 23種類 を扱っています
これは Cambridge Dictionary で一般的と紹介されているものをベースにしています

最後の例は前置詞と全く同じ使い方ですが、文法的には数詞の前の about は副詞です
数詞が続く about は意味が「について」ではなく「約」になります
数詞の前の about が副詞なのは、次のような使い方ができるためです
About ten of us are going there next Monday.（私たち約10人は来週の月曜日にそこに行く予定です）
前置詞は、前置詞＋名詞 で他の語を修飾するものです
この about は単に後ろの ten（形容詞）を修飾しているだけなので副詞です
多くの前置詞は副詞としても使えるし、副詞も前置詞として使えるものがあります
文の構造を理解するうえで品詞は大切ですが、前置詞と副詞を見分けるのがどのぐらい重要かはわかりません。
母国語の日本語で、形容詞とか動詞、助詞などと考えて話している人はいないと思います

above, below は単に上下を示しています
それに対し over, under は上を覆う、覆われているイメージがあります
位置だけでなく数や時間、抽象的なものにも使えます

over は over work（働きすぎ）などのようにやりすぎの印象がありますが、over lunch は食事しながら（食事越しに）の意味になります
普通は during（の間に）や接続詞の while をしながらの意味で使います
while は接続詞ですが、前置詞のような使い方もされるようです

before は時間、概念、空間も含めて前後を意識し、前にあるものによく使います
in front of は物理的、抽象的に前にあるものによく使います
after は時間的な順序が後のものによく使います

beside と next to はどちらも横に並んでいるイメージで同じ意味です
違いは beside が next to より丁寧な言葉になります
既に紹介済みの by も「近く」ですが、横に限らずすぐ近くの位置を示します
near は遠くない（not far away）の意味です
隣（beside, next to）、そば（by）、近く（near）、これくらいの距離感です

日本語だと「的外れ」で直接的ですが、「beside the point（的のそば）」は英語らしい間接的な表現ですね
